There are places where it’s good to be LGBTQ+, and then there’s Palm Springs – a destination in a league of its own. With estimates suggesting that around 50% of the population identifies as a member of the community, it’s no wonder this small desert city has become a beloved haven for Queer individuals. Just two hours by car from Los Angeles, Palm Springs feels like an intimate, welcoming enclave where acceptance is woven into the fabric of everyday life. The city has an array of LGBTQ+ venues, but even those not explicitly labeled as such radiate inclusivity. Naturally, this sense of belonging is something you’d want reflected in your choice of accommodation, and that’s precisely what I found at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort – a sanctuary that effortlessly blends luxury with the community’s warm, inviting spirit.
Nestled in Palm Desert, one of the nine cities that make up the Greater Palm Springs region, the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort is a glamorous retreat located just a 20-minute drive from Palm Springs. While the distance may initially seem like a drawback, it quickly became one of the trip’s highlights. I was in town for Pride (which takes place every November) and as you’d expect, downtown Palm Springs can get lively and crowded during the festivities. Escaping to the tranquility of the JW Marriott after a busy day felt like a true blessing. The resort, which feels like its own self-contained oasis, offers everything you could possibly need right on-site. There are always affordable taxis available on rideshare apps or local services, and having the option to escape the chaos is certainly not something you’ll regret – especially when it’s as special as the JW Marriott.

Just the drive up, in fact, instantly tells you all you need to know about the property. Fairy lights wrap around the palm trees that line the road and, at the heart of it all, is a grand lobby – a dazzling centrepiece that features a bar, a restaurant, and a cozy coffee shop, setting the tone for the resort’s sophistication. Beyond its striking first impression, the JW Marriott boasts an array of world-class amenities, including two expansive golf courses, a cutting-edge fitness center, and a pristine spa. The latter, with its private pools and jacuzzis, feels like a hidden sanctuary within the resort – a true retreat that’s simply unmissable during your stay. Treatments on offer range from a number of facials, massages and couples treatments, which you can book ahead of time if you’d like to. I got a standard facial, which I’m not embarrassed to admit was so relaxing that I fell asleep during it – twice. But what better way is there to unwind after a day at Pride?
The resort boasts an impressive selection of pools beyond those in the spa, with the main three conveniently located at the heart of the property. These strike the perfect balance between sunshine and shade, catering to whatever mood you’re in, and – perhaps most importantly – never feel overly crowded. Between them are two serene hot tubs, which are open late into the night, making them the ideal spot to unwind with a drink after a long day. Whether you’re soaking up the sun or enjoying a tranquil evening dip, the pool area offers the perfect blend of relaxation and luxury.

What truly sets these facilities apart is their sense of privacy. The stunning mountain views surrounding Palm Desert remain unobstructed, with no towering buildings or busy roads to disrupt your peace as you relax. You can also order a wide range of food and drinks directly to your sunbed – or your cabana, if you opt to rent one, which you should definitely consider – including refreshing slushies, cocktails, and soft drinks. The attentive staff go above and beyond to ensure you’re well taken care of. Our server, Evan, took the time to chat with us and remember our names and orders, adding a warm, personal touch that perfectly encapsulates the exceptional JW Marriott experience.
And then there are the rooms, the true highlight of your stay at the JW Marriott. It’s no exaggeration to say that the quality of a room can make or break any trip, and here, the accommodations exceed every expectation. Impeccably clean, thoughtfully designed, and insanely comfortable, they boast some of the most unbelievable views California has to offer. I stayed in a Standard King Room, which features a private balcony perfect for enjoying sunsets, a spacious flatscreen TV, and a charming lounge area that makes it feel like a home away from home. Room service is available from the resort’s excellent dining options, and I highly recommend ordering from the Rockwood Grill. Savouring a delicious meal on the balcony as the sun sets on the mountains is an experience you won’t forget.
The JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort offers an unparalleled escape that perfectly complements the vibrant energy of Palm Springs. Whether you’re there for Pride, just exploring the Greater Palm Springs region, or simply looking for a luxurious retreat, this resort provides a serene oasis with exceptional amenities, stunning views, and impeccable service. Its thoughtful balance of privacy, comfort, and glamour makes it the clear standout choice for your visit. For LGBTQ+ tourists especially, the resort embodies the welcoming spirit of the region, ensuring your stay is as memorable as the destination itself.
