This was the year LGBTQIA+ representation dominated streaming services and mainstream TV channels. There were so many incredible Queer TV moments in 2024 that it was hard to choose a shortlist. Execs finally championed the creativity and diversity of our community, as well as the tender relationship moments, and the straightforwardly sexy (hello, House Of The Dragon). These were the best Queer TV moments of 2024.
House Of The Dragon’s Spontaneous Lesbian Kiss
Season 2 Episode 6 of House Of The Dragon sent FLINTAs into a frenzy, as Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra kissed her prisoner-turned-adviser Mysaria. The moment was made even better by the revelation that the move wasn’t in the script, and was instead something the actors felt compelled to do on the spot…
Mr Loverman’s Exploration Of Closeted Black Male Sexuality
Released to little fanfare on the BBC in October, Mr Loverman delved into the duality of joy and fear that exists in Queer men of the Windrush generation. Based on Bernadine Evaristo’s novel of the same name, the result is a heartbreaking but much needed exploration of elder POC Queerness.
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’s Family Makeover Challenge
One of the most heartwarming Queer TV moments of the year came in the makeover challenge of Drag Race UK season six, where the girls had to put a loved one in drag. I Kissed A Girl Proving No One Befriends An Ex Like A Lesbian
I Kissed A Girl’s spiderweb of friendships-turned-hookups-turned-relationships-turned-exes-turned-besties proved that sapphics are simply a more evolved species, especially when left alone in a villa with only Dannii Minogue for company. Also, Georgia’s speech about the word “Lesbian” made all Queer women cry.
Frenchie’s Casual Bisexuality In The Boys
The Boys demonstrated how easy it can be to show that a character is Bi without loads of questions or drama when they introduced Colin as fan favourite Frenchie’s new boyfriend. Their biggest stumbling block was that Frenchie had murdered Colin’s parents, rather than because of any inner Queer turmoil.
Heartstopper’s Swoony Queer Teen Love
The tear-jerking high school romance returned to show more of the highs and lows of teenage Queerness, progressing Charlie and Nick’s relationship into the college chapter and revealing more of Elle’s Trans journey. Few TV shows have ever glittered with so much tender joy.
The Record-Breaking Number Of LGBTQ+ Olympians And Paralympians
A record-breaking 193 Queer athletes took part in the Paris 2024 Olympics, with a further 38 competing in the Paralympics. Friendship, Love and Coffee In The Boyfriend
Beautiful in its simplicity, The Boyfriend was a dreamy reality TV show that saw a group of Gay Japanese men live together in a gorgeous villa, work together in a coffee truck, and hope to fall in love. This series proved you don’t need loads of messy drama and screaming to make a great dating show. It also helped that these men were all so chic.
