UK Black Pride returned to London yesterday (11 August) for its 19th annual celebration.
Tens of thousands of people took part in the event at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, which saw performances from the likes of Amaria BB, Bollyqueer and Bombay Mami.
The theme of ‘freedom and justice’ was the focus of this year’s event, which UK Black Pride’s co-founder and CEO said was due to be the “biggest and boldest” yet.
Since its inception in 2005, the event has quickly become the world’s largest celebration for LGBTQ+ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Latin American and Middle Eastern descent.
“It is an amazing event that promotes unity as well as celebrating diversity, and at a time when some have sought to divide, harass and harm communities of colour, it is more vital than ever,” said Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
“I’m proud that London’s rich diversity and openness towards people of all faiths, nationalities and backgrounds, is what truly defines us and sets us apart as the greatest city in the world.
“We must continue to do all we can to stand together as we work to build a better London for all.”
