Washington DC: Five Tips For LGBTQ+ Tourists Visiting The US Capital

To see a rainbow flag billowing in the wind on a warm sunny day is something quite marvellous.

To see a rainbow flag billowing in the wind on a warm sunny day, in an iconic location steeped in American political history, is something quite marvellous. A beautiful thing in a place where hopes for change could be made possible, in a time when we need it the most. A home for potential. And now, a city that is also gearing up to take on the batten in 2025 from late May through to early June and host WorldPride.

However, far from just rolling out the multi-coloured carpet, this US gem is taking its duties seriously. Washington DC will be hosting a pride that truly is fit for the queens. And, whether or not it’s a, ‘Yassss’ from you, a stay and slay, or a temporary pin on the map for another year, DC is giving us life, in more ways than fun!

So, ahead of the celebrations – here’s our top five tips on navigating the queer-friendly capital city.

Make the most of the city’s queer nightlife

DC queer nightlife does not disappoint, whether it’s a casual drink in a bar or a night out in a club – the city has it all. However, due to Pride, book areas ahead of time and prepare to queue if you are arriving late. BUNKER club is worth waiting for, but you should avoid lining up where you can. During Pride there are also event nights dotted around the capital that are worth checking out.

Take the time to enjoy the landmarks

Naturally you’ll be dancing, wearing fabulous outfits and holding a fan that’s louder than a siren, but take time to walk around the multiple (incredible) monuments dotted around DC. It’s great for your step count, selfies, and jaw-dropping statues. Top tip: Book a US Capitol building tour to see the building in a way you never could have imagined.

Visit during Pride and embrace the experience!

At the best of times, the city has a vibe that makes you feel at ease, but during Pride you’ll feel it on a whole new level. From street parties, to flags, to smiles in the crowd – enjoy the experience, take in the US capital for all that it’s sharing. If you aren’t too tired, do an open top tour, e-bike or boat along the river from Alexandria to Georgetown.

Explore the food DC has to offer

Mouth-watering eateries are lined around the city. U Street Corridor is full of cute places for snacks to larger meals and is a welcoming neighbourhood to the community. Book in at Le Diplomate for a steak that will stop you in your tracks and silence the stomach rumble.

Find accommodation that suits your needs

Washington DC is very accessible via walking, trains or Ubers, but Dupont Circle and its surrounding area is a great location to bed down. There are plenty of great hotels within easy access to Pride activities and the monuments, as well as a number of incredible queer venues.
